This is an edged planchet that was intended to be struck as a reproduction of an early U.S. Silver Dollar. I think it was part of a display we put together showing steps in the early “sans collar” minting process. Experts know that on original coins, the edge designs overlap , so there are no blank spaces like on this piece. The edge dies I made were a bit shorter, which created the blank space on ours. I didn’t feel this needed a copy stamp, but I did mark the blank spot (very sloppily) with my small RL punch. This is considered a type 2 planchet because the edge had been applied. I doubt if any type 2 planchets of that period exist in the wild, but if so would be would be very valuable.
