During the process of calibrating our new hydraulic coin press, we accidently had too much pressure applied to the pewter slug.
Installing some kind of stop break that can handle the pressure is standard practice. Grabbing the 1796 Dollar die was purely coincidental as a convenience! The pewter was merely to protect the face of the die while pressure was applied. The resulting piece is an extremly dramatic example of a die cap style error.
The couterstamps are used to define this as a Ron Landis die variety.
